A Gift From The Goddess
Marla Mase Has Given All of Us the Ability to SPEAK!
Well…if you missed it, you missed OUT! This past weekend, on July 23rd at the Christopher Street Coffee House in New York City, Marla Mase performed. And, from the accounts that this writer has heard, (because I’m too far away from NYC to get there), Marla Mase was an absolute stunner!
Big surprise, right? NOT! AND, just to add a little touch of jealousy to this article, in my mailbox I almost flipped out when I opened a package and it was not a book to review (I have hundreds of those). No. The sun shone through the clouds, the birds sang, the gods wept – whatever you want to use to describe the feeling that comes over one when they are looking at something that is about to change their day for the better. I opened the package and, in my hand, was Marla Mase’s latest CD, SPEAK!!
Suffice to say…I couldn’t speak. Upon racing into the house and emailing her ASAP to let her know that my workday was officially done, and I was ONLY going to sit and listen to this CD over and over and over again, I proceeded to grab a soda, feed my dog, and listen to SPEAK…over and over and over again. (See? My word is my truth!)
I began with Lioness (Oh. My. God. What a way to begin!!) Power, energy, simply perfection. I went on to Scream. After Scream I stopped and played it again. (The word magnificent may soon become annoying to you). On and on I went, like a mountaineer on an expedition to the top of Mount St. Helens – while it was exploding lava – I felt that unbelievably hot. What I mean by ‘hot’ is not a Baywatch reference, it is a reference to pure and utter invincibility that built up in my mind. Listening to Marla Mase (and, I received A Brief Night Out as well, so I was on cloud nine and ten), is like receiving great news. I mean, GREAT news! What is your dream? What is the thing you want more than anything else in this world? Listening to Marla Mase absolutely wipes away the: “I don’t have money this month for groceries; “Gosh, I hate my job;” “Why doesn’t anyone ever do the dishes in this house?” You know, normal mundane things like that, which cloud the mind and make everyone want to head to a hospital and stare at ink blots for the rest of their lives, in order to get at least some excitement running through their veins. Marla Mase offers that stimulation. And she has reserved the ‘pinnacle’ where ‘The Goddess’ sits yet again with, SPEAK. She has offered yet another complete work of art and empowerment that seduces the mind and takes the soul on a flight that never ends.
Her words are pure poetry. Divine Restlessness…She Hooked Him Up…and, my favorite, Queen of Imperfection (Although Scream and Kill Love are very close runners-up). Marla Mase SPEAKs her mind, and she enters into listeners minds and allows them to step away from what the world believes they should be, or the mannerisms that they feel they have to maintain day in and day out because of where they are or who they’re speaking with, in order to “fit in” to normal society. In fact, Marla Mase and SPEAK offer…everlasting freedom.
Think about it. Yes, you know what you have to do. The same things even “The Goddess,” Marla Mase has to do, I would assume. There are dental appointments, grocery shopping, clients with attitudes in your business, lame women, even lamer men – that’s life. But to have someone who is not only willing but able to push all that crap away and let you discover, herald, and feel every raw emotion that’s buried deep inside of you, and gives you the PERMISSION to let it all out, is a true “gift from The Goddess.”
When Marla Mase first came out with A Brief Night Out – a completely dynamic debut album about love, passion, war, and addiction which captures the essence of the classic “downtown” New York City sound, it became a type of ‘play’ on the stage – a performance that knocked all others to the floor. With SPEAK, I am already imagining the super strength that Marla Mase is going to release on stage with these new tracks. And I am already trying to figure out how to pack quickly and get my butt to the City as fast as humanly possible. But, since that won’t work, I at least can play SPEAK and A Brief Night Out over and over and over again J. Even my dog is beginning to offer that smile of contentment because he can feel the relaxation of my brain (which never relaxes for more than five minutes at a time). And the rest of the house has a spectacular ‘vibe’ in the atmosphere that automatically makes people feel better about entering.
