Time: 9:00 am

The Montgomery County Master Gardeners, a program of University of Maryland Extension, will host a Grow It Eat It (GIEI) Summer Open House on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at the Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood. This family-friendly event gives attendees the chance to check out the different kinds of gardens at the Master Garden demonstration garden, get tips on late-season gardening, buy garden supplies and plants, pick up a free composting bin, visit farm animals, and tour a farmhouse.

Visitors will see demonstrations on tomato seed saving and have the opportunity to bring their own home-grown tomatoes to share at the Tomato Tasting, which includes voting and prizes for category winners. The Open House features free classes or demonstrations on aquaponics, indoor grow lighting, extending the growing season, diagnosing garden pests and diseases, and raising chickens. Classes for children (on gardening, flowers, or trees) and for adults (on tomato canning) are also available for a small fee and preregistration. All other demonstrations and activities are free; donations are appreciated.
